A gemstone of regality and vibrancy, lapis lazuli is steeped in ancient Egyptian history, where it was known as “heaven’s stone.” Mines in Afghanistan have produced lapis lazuli since around 700 BC and remain in use today, making them the oldest continuously worked sources of commercial gemstones. At HBJ, we are drawn to its rich cobalt blues, organic striations, and glimmering flecks of pyrite.
Origins: Afghanistan
MOHs Hardness: 5-6
Care: Lapis is a particularly soft gemstone. Avoid dropping your lapis lazuli jewelry onto hard surfaces and keep away from chemicals: contact with cosmetics, oils, acids, etc. can damage lapis lazuli. To clean your lapis lazuli jewelry, use warm, soapy water and remove any dirt with a toothbrush or the like. Do not use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner

THE ANATOMY OF SHELLS

Hannah spent much of her childhood on Nantucket’s playground: the beach. Summer days were spent running through the dunes and collecting seashells, used as shovels for sandcastles and later brought home as treasures for windowsills. These forms now live on as sculptural, ocean-inspired jewelry: celebrating memory, place, and a deep connection to the sea.

Deceptively complex, these spiral shells were individually hand-carved by Hannah. The sculptural designs highlight the natural geometry of shells, transforming them into unique, handcrafted jewelry that is both organic and refined.

Crafted in solid silver, gold or platinum, each piece is made for lasting wear. The weight and integrity of fine metals create shell jewelry that is both durable and elevated. Our signature matte finish honors the material, allowing it to soften and evolve with wear, developing a natural patina that tells the story of the wearer.
