Tahitian Keshi Pearls are formed as a byproduct of (nucleated) cultured pearls. Cultured pearls are formed when an irritant becomes trapped in a mollusk. The mollusk secretes a fluid, called nacre, which coats the irritant layer upon layer until a pearl is formed. Once these pearls are removed from the mollusk, however, it continues to secrete the nacre to fill the void left by the cultured pearl. Since Keshi pearls are formed without a nucleus, their shapes are skewed, organic, and pure nacre. Pearls from Tahiti are beloved for their grey to black hues.
Origins: Saltwater farms in Tahiti
MOHs Hardness: 2.5
Care: Pearls are a particularly soft and porous organic material. Keep pearls away from chemicals. Contact with cosmetics, oils, acids, etc., can discolor or ruin the texture of pearls. To clean, use warm water with mild soap. Do not use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner.
Strands of pearls should not be washed- they should be wiped down with a soft, clean cloth before storing. Wetting the silk can cause stretching.

THE ANATOMY OF THE BARNACLE

Like tiny ocean blossoms, the barnacles on our jewelry hold the rough-and-tumble nostalgia of the sea. Each one is hand-carved, gathering in quiet clusters that speak to the resilience of holding fast through changing tides.

From tiny clusters to larger barnacles set with gemstones, all of our barnacles are hand-carved by Hannah.

We love to adorn pearls, turquoise, and other beads and stones with barnacles - a curious twist on a classic design. Drilled and set into the surface, the barnacles cling as though they always belonged there.

Cast in solid silver, gold, and platinum, the barnacles take on a new permanence as tiny forms that capture the ocean’s raw beauty.
