This ring centers a pale Montana sapphire in tranquil tones of seafoam and baby blue, a gem that holds coastal light within it. Natural inclusions and color zoning ripple gently through the stone like currents in shallow water- proof of its natural origins. Set in yellow gold with hand-sculpted barnacles and accented with tiny diamonds, this ocean-inspired ring embodies sanctuary and stillness: a quiet place where light gathers, and the tide rests.
Mined in the US and easy to trace its ethical origins, these gems tend to come in muted, dreamy colors. Sapphires are a corundum variety, like rubies, that come in every color but red. While classic, cobalt sapphires are the most popular, the HBJ studio loves those with inclusions and atypical coloring. Sapphire inclusions are formed by minerals called needles; in ancient Greece and Rome, royalty believed that sapphires provided protection.

I cannot express how happy I am to get to wear this piece of art every day! Every detail of this ring is perfection. The Montana sapphire is normally a moody greenish-gray but can appear a lighter green or even a shade of blue in different lighting. The white gold barnacles add just the right amount of asymmetrical interest without overpowering the beauty of the stone or the simplistic outline of the design. An homage to Hannah's childhood and the nostalgia of her fishing home, this collection comprises gritty nautical-inspired pieces. The collection is named after Hannah's father's fishing vessel, the Ruthie B, which was named after Hannah's mother. Ruthie B. celebrates the mystery and natural peculiarity of the ocean that painted the artist’s childhood. In their weathered island home, Hannah and her six siblings learned how to entertain themselves amidst the chaos that comes with such a large family. The dingy fishing paraphernalia that littered their backyard was a playground of inspiration: raw snapshots of beauty against the clean backdrop of their hometown of Nantucket.
