Named for the Greek word meaning tree-like, dendritic agates were formed by a series of geological coincidences almost 100 million years ago. The presence of varying minerals accounts for the variety of colors found in these rare gemstones: the iron and manganese seep through very fine fractures in the agate’s surface and crystallize inside, appearing like stretching branches growing towards the sun’s light.
Origins: Deccan Traps of India
MOHs Hardness: 6.5-7
Care: Agate is relatively sturdy but not invinceable. Clean your agate jewelry with warm soapy water and a soft cloth or brush, rinse well, and dry thoroughly. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, as color can fade. Keep away from chemicals and abrasive materials, and do not use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner.
