January Birthstone – Garnet

Hannah Blount Jewelry | Garnet Birthstone

Beautiful garnet gems have a long, rich history dating back to Egyptian Pharaohs – even mentioned in the stories of King Solomon. Some believe garnets denote regeneration and vitality, making them a great fit as January's birthstone.

Garnet is derived from the Latin word for seed; some speculate that this is in reference to the stone's similar appearance to pomegranate seeds. Most popular in red, garnets also come in shades of orange, green and purple. The rarest is the tsavorite garnet, a green variety of the stone rich in viridescence. Coming in between 6.5 - 7.5 on the MOHS scale, all garnets have the same structure but vary in chemical makeup.
