Behind the Magic | Aventurescence

Aventurescence is the optical phenomena of glitter-like shimmer within a gemstone. Derived from the Italian word for 'by chance', aventurescence was discovered, by chance, in the 18th century. This optical phenomena occurs predominately inn feldspar gemstones, like sunstones; the reflective disks appear like glimmering inclusions.

Not all sunstones possess aventurescence; most sunstones are warm-hued, varying from creamy white to vibrant orange. The prevalence of aventurescence depends on the size and amount of inclusions. Sunstone inclusions can be hematite, copper, or some other mineral. Aventurescence appears like metallic flashes within sunstones.
