8.61ct Kingman turquoise stone measuring 14x27mm.

Scrimshaw hearkens back to sailors' crafts of the early 1800's. It is the art of engraving an illustration into porous materials such as shells, ivory, or soft gemstones. Scrimshaw involves carving a design into the material with a sharp scribe and filling the lines with India ink. Each scrimshaw piece is sealed with epoxy to protect the illustrations. All scrimshaw is hand-scribed by Hannah.

Chain is bright sterling silver and includes 14k yellow gold egg-shaped loop links and bail.

Hail to the Hailstone Ruthie B Necklace

The fish hook clasp and red silk string make this delicate pearl necklace more whimsical than a traditional pearl necklace and yet elegant. I put the clasp to the side so it can be seen since it is very unique!

Hauntingly Gorgeous

Crafted from experts. The lunar color of the sapphire occupies a liminal space betwixt pale gray and pale green, invoking the realm of lunar mysticism. The muted gold on the band is subtle and very complementary to the muted gem. If you are into flashy, look-at-my-blood-diamond ring and how much my husband makes rings, this is not for you. If you have tempered-earthy, sustainably harvested, and visceral tastes, this is your huckleberry. She absolutely loves it.

Rings to write about

Like jewelry straight from a fantasy, HBJ's collection inspires a nostalgia directly rooted in all the magical trinkets scattered throughout history. No longer does one need to forego exorbitant wealth to be hands on with relevant works that had to earn their names. These collections have it all built in right from the start, because the team at HBJ has profound (and just as magical) personal investment that lives through each piece. Every ring, necklace and adornment has its own personality, refinement, and story, all without feeling like they were mechanically reproduced, a difficult task to accomplish for any artist. Without pause I can most definitely recommend HBJ, because you're not just buying jewelry, you're part of its story.

the story of scrimshaw

THE STORY of SCRIMSHAW

Like the art of tattooing, the Scrimshaw collection modernizes the traditional beauty of hand-etched adornments. Utilizing the technique of engraving and inking illustrations into various materials, scrimshaw dates back to whalers of the late 18th century; scrimshanders of yore created their hand-etched pieces to pass the time at night aboard their ships, often working with the current and movement of the vessel to create their designs. The longing that inspired sailors, as each night of their voyage passed, evolved into beautiful art that captured the romance of their yearning. Whether they channeled their heart’s desire or took respite from their unknown futures, scrimshaw work has always been deeply personal to Hannah, yet incredibly accessible to all familiar with nostalgia’s spell. A labor of love, each piece is intricately hand-scribed by Hannah; consisting of various soft gemstones and seashells with fine, mixed metals and India ink, the scrimshaw collection features hand-carved gestures, anatomical studies, and oceanic creatures. Combining the sentimentality of each HBJ piece with the endless inspiration the ocean provides, each Scrimshaw piece serves as a symbol of protection, resistance, and nostalgia.
